Easter will be celebrated in style in Portimão
Portimão is planning an exciting series of festive events to celebrate Easter. Between March 23 and April 7, the town will host everything from egg hunts and live musical performances to a special Easter ‘Mercadinho’ (small fair).
Some of the town’s main landmarks are also being decorated to get locals and visitors into the Easter spirit, from Largo da Mó on the main shopping street to Praça da República (also known as Alameda), where a carousel, a special swing and a ‘selfie’ photospot will be set up for everyone to enjoy between 3pm and 8pm.
One of the highlights of the festive programme promises to be the ‘Mercadinho’, which will take place from March 23 to 30 at Jardim 1º de Dezembro, the public garden in front of the TEMPO theatre.
The fair will see exhibitors setting up shop in small cottages throughout the garden, selling everything from handicraft to traditional local products. The fair will be open between 5pm and 8pm on weekdays and between 11am and 8pm on weekends and holidays.
Just a short walk away at Jardim Visconde Bívar, children aged up to 12 will be able to take part in chocolate egg hunts between March 29 and 31 from 3pm to 6pm and meet the Easter Bunny.
The programme also features two special live shows: ‘Madagascar – A Musical Adventure’, inspired by the popular children’s film, which will take place on March 30 at 4pm at Portimão Arena; and an Easter concert by the Orquestra do Algarve (Algarve Orchestra), led by maestro Martim Sousa Tavares, on the same day at 9pm at TEMPO. Tickets, costing between €15 and €50 for ‘Madagascar – A Musical Adventure’ and €10 for the Algarve Orchestra concert – can be purchased online.
For those who prefer the more traditional religious celebrations, several local churches and parishes will host a series of Masses, Eucharists and processions.
