Drug trafficking in Indonesia carries potential death penalty
Two young Portuguese citizens, described today as university students, have been arrested in Indonesia for drug trafficking, reports SIC Notícias.
The arrests took place on Sunday.
According to SIC, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the situation, assuring that the embassy in Jakarta is accompanying it – with a meeting with the two detainees scheduled for tomorrow (Thursday) in the prison in which they are being held.
As the television station points out, drug trafficking in Indonesia “can be punished with a death sentence”.
SIC adds that it has information that there could be more Portuguese citizens involved, but the Ministry for now can only confirm the arrest of the two young people, whose identities have not been revealed.
It is understood the two Portuguese are both aged “between 20 and 30”.
