Estoril Open runs until April 7
Estoril Open, the biggest Portuguese tennis tournament, begins today with four matches on the main court at Clube de Ténis do Estoril.
Kicking the action off will be the match-up between Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut (93rd in the ATP ranking) and Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic (50th) at noon, after which Austria’s Dominic Thiem (ranked 3rd in 2020 but down to 91st currently) will take on Germany’s Maximilian Marterer (97th). The third match of the day will see Portugal’s top-ranked tennis player Nuno Borges (62nd) jump into action against France’s Lucas Pouille (241st), followed by a clash between Austrian player Jurij Rodionov (119th) and Chilean rival Cristian Garin (112nd).
João Sousa (272nd), Portugal’s most successful tennis player ever, who has announced his retirement after the tournament, is only due to take to the court on Tuesday against France’s 19-year-old prospect Arthur Fils (37th), along with the two other national representatives, Henrique Rocha (197th) and Jaime Faria (220th), who will also face French opponents in Gael Monfils (45th) and Constant Lestienne (90th).
All matches will be aired live on Portuguese television on Eurosport 2.
