6th Annual Beach Cleaning Event Launched by MAR Shopping Algarve

Everyone is welcome to join the activity, which takes place on Quarteira Beach on April 10.

In line with its commitment to sustainability, MAR Shopping Algarve is organising the 6th edition of its Beach Cleaning programme to protect the region’s natural heritage. The event will take place on Quarteira Beach on April 10 from 09h30 to 12h30.

The annual project is backed by a number of organisations, including government agencies and private enterprises such as IKEA and the European Recycling Platform, and counts the participation of 322 volunteers and 20 partners.

Through this initiative, a total of 21,680 kg of waste has already been collected by MAR Shopping, with a commendable recycling rate of 56%. This year, the partner entities for the action are Loulé City Council, the Algarve Tourism Region, IKEA, Designer Outlet Algarve, the Portuguese Environment Agency, the Quarteira Parish Council, Águas do Algarve, ALGAR, the Algarve Science Centre, the Algarve Oncological Association and ARA – Animal Rescue Algarve.

To monitor this initiative, MAR Shopping Algarve has planned a series of creative workshops and ateliers during European Climate Week, from May 13 to 19. These workshops aim to use the waste collected during the beach cleaning initiative to create artistic pieces, which will be displayed at the shopping centre’s meeting place.

With these actions, MAR Shopping Algarve also supports the “Water is Life” campaign, promoted by the Águas de Portugal Group (AdP), the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) and the Water and Waste Services Regulatory Entity (ERSAR). The campaign’s objective is to promote water conservation and encourage the adoption of efficient practices while sparking conversations about environmental solutions and promoting education and awareness within the community.

Participation in the beach cleaning event is free, and you can join directly at the event location. Participants will receive a kit including a reusable bag, gloves, a t-shirt, and a rubbish collection bag.
