The tragic story of a woman (already a mother of two children) who gave birth, cut her baby’s umbilical cord, put him in a series of plastic bags and left him (to die of asphyxiation over four hours) while she went off to work has seen a court in Aveiro deliver a sentence of over 13 years. The court ruled that the woman (aged 33 at the time) was guilty of aggravated murder and the profaning of a corpse. The death had been minutely planned, judges decided. The woman’s defence lawyer has said his client will be appealing – arguing that the charge should have been infanticide, “taking into account the woman’s mental state at the time of the crime”.
