Exciting month for sports fans in Portimão

April brings plethora of sports events to Portimão

There will be no shortage of sports events this month in Portimão. From handball and athletics to kayak polo, skateboarding, underwater fishing and motorsports, the municipality will host a wide range of national-level events.

The programme kicks off with the 2nd National Optimist Qualification event, which begins today and runs until Sunday (April 4-7) and will feature 80 sailors from all clubs in the country. This competition is organised by the Portimão Naval Club, the Portuguese Sailing Federation, the Southern Regional Sailing Association, and the Portuguese Association of the International Optimist Class.

This weekend (April 6-7), Praia da Rocha will host two events: the National Mixed Ultimate Championship, a frisbee competition which will involve nearly 150 players from clubs across Portugal; and the Spring Beach Tennis Tournament, part of the Portuguese Tennis Federation calendar.

A week later between April 12-14, the riverside area of Portimão will host an official stage of the Liga Pro Skate LPS skateboard championship, while surf, art and music will be the centrepieces of the Arade Classic, which will be held in Praia da Rocha on April 13 and 14 – the same date that National Kayak Polo Championship II, organised by the Portimão Naval Club, will take place at the Arade River, and that a regional pétanque tournament will be held in Montes de Alvor.

Motorsports fans will be looking forward to the Portimão City Rally, due to take place on April 20 and 21, while the Liga Pequenos Campeões football tournament, aimed at young players aged 5 to 9, will be held at the Mexilhoeira Grande sports complex on April 20, 21, 25, 27 and 28.

The 50th anniversary of Portugal’s Carnation Revolution will be celebrated once again with the iconic Liberty Race, organised by the Algarve Athletics Association and the Portimão Municipal Council, on April 25.

Other highlights of the municipal sports agenda will be a basketball match-up between local club Portimonense and SL Benfica, one of Portugal’s top clubs, on April 27 at the Boavista sports pavilion, as well as handball competition Masters 50 at the Gimnodesportivo and Teixeira Gomes pavilions

A stage of the National Underwater Fishing Championship will be held on April 27 and 28, while the local initiative Active Sundays will continue at the Alvor sports complex on April 28, offering fitness and dance classes to the community.

May is also promising to be another exciting month for sports fans in Portimão, with planned events including the International Rhythmic Gymnastics Tournament, the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup, and the Portimão Box Cup.
