President officially sets European elections for June 9

It’s the date the last government tried so hard to change – to no avail. And now President Marcelo has made it official: Sunday June 9 will be the day Portuguese citizens can cast their votes in the European elections – a moment many are anticipating in a form of dread as the ‘far right’ throughout Europe is gaining ground. How well the far right does in these elections will affect national politics (already in a mire). Just as worrying is the date: just before a national Bank Holiday, and a time of sun and beachgoing. Will people bother/ remember to vote? That is the concern of those who fear many won’t see the point.
