Engineers responsible for landslide given suspended jail sentences

Guimarães court has today handed down suspended jail terms of two years and three months to two engineers tried in the case of a landslide in 2013 in the parish of Mesão Frio, near Braga. The pair were found guilty of breaching building regulations, acting maliciously and violating duties inherent in their respective roles in the construction of a residential development of 10 houses which were left severely undermined – their owners unable to occupy them for months. The landslide in Mesão Frio, Braga, did not cause damage to lives of residents “by chance”, said the judges, who also ordered the two men to pay €2,500 to two of the residents who had filed claims against them.
