Former Socialist mayor receives suspended jail term

José Artur Neves, the former Secretary of State for Civil Protection already facing criminal prosecution for the inflammable snood ‘scandal’, has received a three year suspended jail sentence for a case that dates back to when he was the mayor of Arouca.

Explain reports, he has been condemned over a charge of ‘prevarication’, involving the paving of a road pre-elections “without complying with legal formalities”.

Mr Neves other criminal charges, in the snood ‘scandal’, relate to suspicions of abuse of power, fraud in the obtaining of subsidies, and prevarication.
