Long-awaited meeting between police forces and government takes place tomorrow

Next few days will see meeting with teachers

With parliament in a form of meltdown – PS leader Pedro Nuno Santos has just ‘challenged the government’ to present a motion of confidence, for his party to show it doesn’t have any – PM Luís Montenegro is battling to keep his eye on the horizon, tabling meetings with “the two priority sectors” when it comes to public sector pay disputes.

The PSD leader announced that the government will be meeting union bosses representing Portugal’s security forces tomorrow. The meeting will take place at the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Luís Montenegro was speaking in parliament, during the afternoon session of the heated debate on the programme of his XXIV Constitutional Government, when he made the announcement in response to a request for clarification made by PAN’s one and only MP Inês de Sousa Real.

“We are already fulfilling what I said in my initial speech, that in the next few days we will be opening the negotiation process with both security forces and teachers, which are the two priority sectors in this area,” he said.

Indeed teachers and police forces are the two sectors that have been most vociferous in recent months (over a year, in the case of teachers), mounting protests and work-to-rules in support of demands that the last government refused to address.

Curiously, however, the electoral programme of the PS did address the demands, pledging to meet them if they were elected back into government, which didn’t happen.
