PJ police are investigating the death of an 88-year-old woman who was attacked earlier this week by three Rafeiro Alentejano (cattle) dogs, which she had raised from birth. The attack took place in the village of Conqueiros, in the parish of São Martinho das Amoreiras (Odemira). The dogs, two males and one female, have since been removed to the local pound while a decision is made over what should become of them. The dead woman was discovered by a family member, “with various bite marks made by the animals”. There is no indication that anyone else was involved. Rafeiro Alentejanos are one of the largest Portuguese dog breeds. Their traditional use was to protect flocks and herds from predators.
