This afternoon has seen an ugly debate in parliament with minority parties suggesting the government tried to ‘trick’ the nation into thinking IT alone was responsible for the €1.3 billion in effective income tax relief that will be filtering through to citizens this year. The truth is more likely to be that the government was ‘ambiguous’ (possibly purposely so) but that it did not ‘lie’. The faux-pas however has been reason enough for ‘howls of outrage’ from opposition parties who appear intent on giving the new minority government as rough a ride as is constitutionally possible.
