Isilda Gomes is seventh on the PS list of candidates
Isilda Gomes, mayor of Portimão since 2013, is part of the Socialist Party’s (PS) list of candidates for the upcoming European elections.
Gomes, 71, is seventh on the list of PS candidates, meaning there is a very real possibility that the mayor could be elected to the European Parliament, considering that PS elected nine MEPs (Members of European Parliament) for the ninth European Parliament in the 2019 elections.
Leading the list is Marta Temido, Portugal’s Minister of Health between 2018 and 2022, with former Portuguese MPs Francisco Assis and Ana Catarina Mendes in second and third.
PS Algarve has already celebrated Isilda Gomes’ possible move to Brussels, stressing how it represents the first opportunity in 20 years for the Algarve to have a MEP.
“On June 9, we have the opportunity to elect someone from the Algarve, a local official with a strong connection to the people. Isilda Gomes’s human and political qualities are recognised throughout the country. A resilient woman, a doer, with strong social concerns and a knack for managing finances, who, with the experience gained in the Committee of the Regions, will undoubtedly fight to find solutions to the problems of the Algarve and be an active and supportive voice for the southern regions in European institutions,” says Luís Graça, president of PS Algarve.
If Isilda Gomes is in fact elected to European Parliament, she will leave the local council of Portimão in the middle of her final term. Deputy mayor Álvaro Bila would likely be her replacement.
