CHEGA has announced that it will be presenting a formal vote of condemnation against President Marcelo’s recent remarks about “the need to pay” for Portugal’s colonial ‘crimes’ of hundreds of years ago. Centre-right Iniciativa Liberal has also waded into this ‘toxic theme’, saying it supports the government in the answer given over the weekend. Political commentator, State advisor and friend of the president Luís Marques Mendes has meantime admitted that Marcelo’s remarks were, perhaps, the most unhappy of his mandate this far. President Marcelo has been ‘talking’ a great deal about subjects that have then been repeated in the press – to the extent that he has been parodied, yet again, by satirical programme ‘Isto é Gozar com Quem Trabalha’. The overriding feeling today is that President Marcelo needs to keep his counsel a little closer than he has been.
