The ‘random players’ play again

On May 19 and 22, there will be two additional performances of Napoleon’s Algarve Nightmare to be staged at Quinta das Borboletas. The play written entirely in rhyme is an unusual and humorous presentation based on fact.

The group will be performing the show as part of a theatre dinner evening. Tickets are priced at €30 euros with profits being donated to the charity Families in Need in Portugal.

The evening commences from 7pm with light refreshments and live music. This will be followed by the main course and Act One of the play, then dessert and Act Two of the play. Finally, there will be more live music to dance to.

Napolean’s Algarve Nightmare 1

The ‘random players’ have acquired a reputation for comic shows with actors dressed in extraordinary costumes and on this occasion there is plenty of cross-dressing! Olhão’s bearded fisher-folk are played by women and Queen Maria I is played by a man. The play includes other members of the Portuguese royal family who fled to Brazil in 1807 when Napoleon’s troops invaded.  It was the peasant people of the Algarve who showed stiff resistance when 4,000 soldiers arrived in the region. Their inability to quell the riots caused Napoleon to have nightmares!

The restaurant is located in Areeiro on the outskirts of Almancil. There is ample parking nearby. The main course should be ordered in advance when reserving tickets. Wine, beer and soft drinks are included in the price. Additional drinks and coffees can be purchased at the bar. The show will be performed in a large and attractive marquee seating around 35 guests.

The script is written by Carolyn Kain supported by a team of actors and backstage crew of 16.
