Landowners call for more time to prepare against forest fires

The date by which landowners should have ‘cleared their land’ of undergrowth to help prevent the spread of rural fires falls today, but many profess to not being ready. The rains have made clearing ‘difficult’; forestry sappers have not been able to respond to all requests in time, and ‘all in all’ people want an extension of the time period, on the understanding that fines (which technically start tomorrow, from €5,000, for private owners, to €25,000 for collective entities/ companies etc.) should be waived for the time being.
