Prosecutors press for jail in EDP ‘corruption’

With the closing arguments today of the long-running EDP case, public prosecutors have called for effective jail sentences for former economy minister Manuel Pinho, and disgraced former banker Ricardo Salgado, saying it is clear both committed crimes of corruption, money laundering and fiscal fraud. The case also includes charges against Mr Pinho’s wife, for whom prosecutor Rui Batista today suggested a four-year suspended sentence. The defendants’ arguments have always centred on there being no case to answer. Manuel Pinho meantime has been under house arrest since December 2021.
