Foreign affairs minister Paulo Rangel has been speaking at a debate to commemorate Europe Day – and outlining the strategy of the country’s AD government to try and control migration. The intention is to enter into ‘labour agreements’ with Portuguese speaking countries so that people arriving here knowing that they will have work, and hopefully an offer of accommodation. Said Rangel, accommodation is one of the problems of agriculture (and multiple other sectors) “and we know (solving) it is urgent”. The argument that investing in the countries of people who migrate “because if they are more developed, the flows will also be more controlled”, is not one that applies to Portugal, he said, as the country has “limited capacity” in this regard, “but Europe has resources”.
