“Believe it or not!” Jenny firmly closes her van door. “Two calls on the same day,” APAA’s president is taken aback. “Exactly the same problem.” Go on. “Mother cat and kits hiding on roof tops for safety. Sneaking into the house for food.” Luckily both households have patient, feline-friendly owners. “They have been fed and cared for. But need SNiP’ping.” Catching mum first then the kittens when old enough. “One of the mums is already pregnant again! Kittens are only just coming up for two months.”
The Association for Protection of Animals Algarve has a busy helpline. “Running out of traps!” Apparently, a kindly canine friend, Clare, had spotted a pregnant dog not far from a gypsy camp. They left a trap in the hope the dog would get used to it and be trapped fairly effortlessly. “Unfortunately someone nicked the trap!” So? “We had to find a large trap and start the process again.” The poor dog will need vet care, and hopefully re-homed. Puppies? “Yes, I guess those too!”
Money is raised through ‘Pop-Up’ Shops, events and their two charity shops, Alvor and Silves, where there is always helpful staff and lots of household goods and treasures to buy.
