Justice minister gets round table (again) with prison guard syndicates

Like police, prison guards reject ‘mission supplement’ offer so far

Minister of Justice Rita Júdice is on a new round of talks with syndicates representing prison guards – which have already rejected the government’s initial offer for a ‘mission supplement’.

The last meeting was scheduled for Tuesday with the National Union of Prison Guard Corps (SNCGP), the Union Association of Prison Guard Corps Managers (ASCCGP) and the Independent Union of Prison Guard Corps (SICGP), calling the proposal presented by the minister “humiliating”.

Júdice has made a proposal similar to the one made by the Minister of Internal Affairs to GNR and PSP unions, which have also rejected the terms this far.

The issue with prison guards is that in addition to career development, they want salaries and pay supplements updated – including a mission supplement “similar to the one awarded to the Judicial Police”.

This is the ‘major stumbling block’ (up till now): the government does not seem willing to extend the level of mission supplement awarded to PJ police last year to other members of the country’s security forces – prompting repetitive forms of protest.

According to the SNCGP, there are currently 3,885 prison guards in the country, but around 1,500 more are needed.
