Faro kennel marks 1,000 animal milestone

Faro kennel has helped find forever homes for 208 animals

Faro’s municipal kennel – officially named ‘Centro de Recolha Oficial de Animais de Faro (CROAF) – reached a milestone last week, sheltering its 1,000th animal since its inauguration in January 2023.

The facility takes in cats and dogs for “several reasons,” ranging from stray animals found on public streets to animals brought in by authorities or other partnering entities, either to be sterilised or because they were found to be living in poor or dangerous conditions.

A total of 468 cats have been neutered as part of the local ‘Trap, Neuter, Return’ (Captura, Esterilização e Devolução, or C.E.D, in Portuguese) programme, along with 215 cats and dogs which were neutered outside of the scheme.

The Faro kennel has also helped find forever homes for 208 animals and returned 88 lost animals to their owners. Meanwhile, the vast majority of cats collected for sterilisation are returned to their colonies.

Besides the sterilisations carried out at the local CROAF, the municipal council of Faro also financially helps local animal associations carry out their own neutering campaigns.
