Prime minister Luís Montenegro has stressed that Portugal is “objectively one of the safest countries in Europe and the world”, in spite of “certain types of crime” having been recorded as ‘on the increase’. The most recent RASI (annual internal security report) registered an overall rise in crimes compared with 2022. The full report compiled by Portugal’s Internal Security Centre will now be submitted to parliament for debate. The only moot point about the PM’s apparently relaxed attitude to crime in this country is that the 2022 RASI report showed that violent crimes had increased “in all districts of mainland Portugal”. In other words, it may well only be ‘certain type of crime’ that are increasing, but if these include violent crime (which was already registered ‘in all districts’ in 2022) it does not encourage complacency.
Portugal still one of safest countries in Europe and the world, says PM
