Shopkeepers complain about ‘tent cities’ blighting inner Lisbon

Lisbon’s mayor Carlos Moedas has called for an urgent meeting with the president and prime minister about the situation of immigrants camped in tents within the capital. But today, before that meeting has had a chance to take place, SIC Notícias is reporting on the residents and tourists who now keep away from areas blighted by immigrant encampments, and the several shopkeepers who are demanding an ‘urgent and definitive solution’. The worst area is the one around Igreja dos Anjos (church of angels), which has seen the number of tents increase “month after month”. Today, in popular tabloid Correio da Manhã, there was a story suggesting a convict on the run from France was hiding out in the Arab community camped in Gare do Oriente. The meeting between Mayor Moedas, President Marcelo and prime minister Luís Montenegro is due to take place tomorrow.
