Renewables provide almost 90% of electricity until May

Renewable production supplied 87% of electricity consumption in the first five months of the year in Portugal and almost 70% in May, according to figures released this Monday by REN – Redes Energéticas Nacionais.

From January to May, hydroelectric production supplied 43% of consumption, wind 30%, photovoltaics 8% and biomass 6%, the manager of the national electricity and natural gas systems said in a statement.

Natural gas production supplied 9% of consumption, with the remaining 4% being imported.
