Driver leads police on 150km chase before being stopped on Lisbon bridge

Man was able to evade police for 150km

Police arrested a 25-year-old man who led authorities on a 150km chase in a stolen car this Tuesday before they were able to stop him on Lisbon’s Vasco da Gama bridge.

According to Correio da Manhã tabloid, the chase started in Vila Franca de Xira, a town around 30km north of Lisbon, and continued along the A1 motorway, the Vasco da Gama bridge, and the towns of Alcochete, Infantado, Marateca and Pinhal Novo.

It only ended when the driver was making his way back north on the Vasco da Gama bridge, where he was finally intercepted by PSP and GNR police.

A PSP police officer was run over during the chase on the A1 motorway and is still being treated at Lisbon’s Santa Maria hospital due to injuries to his knee and foot.

The driver has been arrested while a 21-year-old woman who was also in the car was also detained.
