IPMA is forecasting more North African dust to arrive in Portugal
More dust from North Africa is expected to reach Portugal on Thursday (June 6) due to a depression centred over the Madeira archipelago.
According to forecasts from the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), “the weather in mainland Portugal will be influenced by a depression (…), centred over the Madeira region, moving north-east, causing a circulation of the southern quadrant over the continent carrying dust from North Africa”.
For Thursday, cloudy skies are expected but rain is unlikely, with any precipitation likely resulting in the covering of surfaces with the North African dust. Rainfall will be most probably from Friday onwards, possibly accompanied by hail and thunderstorms in some parts of the country.
On Saturday and Sunday, the concentration of dust will decrease, but rain is still forecast, more likely in the north and centre, sometimes with hail and accompanied by thunderstorms, until next Monday (June 10).
According to the IPMA, winds will range from weak to moderate, predominantly from the south, but more intense gusts are not ruled out while it is raining.
In the north and centre, maximum temperatures are expected to rise on Thursday and Friday, reaching between 30ºC and 35°C, though it will be slightly lower along the coast.
On Saturday, the temperature will drop to between 20ºC and 25°C and may be slightly higher in some inland locations.
In the south, the temperature will also rise slightly on Thursday to between 30ºC and 35°C, and then drop to between 20ºC and 25°C from Friday onwards.
After the temperature drop on Saturday, the IPMA forecasts no significant temperature variations until at least Monday.
