June is the month of traditional ‘Santos Populares’ street parties, and the national association of public health doctors fears a new wave of Covid-19 infections will find lots of unwitting victims. Say reports, “Portugal is one of the countries where there has been a sudden increase in the number of Covid infections, reaching 304 new cases last Thursday when the week before there had only been 96”. Santos Populares events tend to bring thousands of people together, thus doctors’ concerns. Needless to say, the new strain of the virus (BA.2.86) does not provoke serious symptoms, nor has it increased mortality.
