Portugal Day/ the day the media analyses the results of elections to the European Parliament is also the day that 29 years ago, a young Cape Verdian man was fatally beaten by neo-Nazis in Lisbon – and as such a ‘protest march’ took place, recalling Alcindo Monteiro (among others) – victims of racism in Portugal. With chants of “racists, fascists, your time has come, immigrants stay, you go away”, the march, supported by various groups, also referred to the horrors ongoing in the Middle East (“Israel is an assassin State, long live the struggle of the Palestinian people”) and the fact that Europe is moving to the right.
