Construction of urban park begins in Parchal

The Parchal park will be “the first major urban park built in the municipality,” says the local council

Construction of a new €2 million urban park has begun in Parchal, Lagoa.

Being built on a 33,000sqm plot of land behind the rundown Arade Congress Centre (formerly known as Pavilhão do Arade), the park has been described by the municipal council as a “project that the people of Lagoa have been waiting for for a long time”.

The Urban Park of Parchal will feature a cross-country track, said to be around 1,500 metres along, as well as several green spaces, rest areas, picnic spots, a street workout zone, an outdoor gym, playgrounds, a 990sqm lake and a snack-bar with restrooms.

The cross-country track will be used to host the 31st European Cross Country Championships in 2025 as well as regional and national competitions. It will also be used by local clubs for training, says the municipal council.

It will be the first major urban park built in the municipality,” says the council, adding that it “will be a family park” that will look to bring different generations together in one space.

Construction is due to last 18 months, meaning it should be completed by the end of 2025.

In addition to this urban park in Parchal, the council says it is also preparing to build two similar parks in Mexilhoeira da Carregação and Lagoa, without revealing their exact locations.
