Vila do Bispo has celebrated another successful edition of its goose barnacle festival (Festival do Perceve), which attracted over 11,000 people to the western Algarve town between June 7 and 9.

Held earlier in the year than usual, the event saw over 5,300 kilos of shellfish being consumed, including over 1,000 kilos of goose barnacles.

Mussels, velvet crabs, fried cuttlefish, mussel porridge and fried moray eel were among the other culinary delicacies enjoyed during the festival, which also featured concerts and the unveiling of a new documentary, ‘Mãos na Maré’ (Hands in the Tide), focusing on Vila do Bispo’s shellfish gatherers and depicting the dangers they face on a daily basis.

The festival is organised by Vila do Bispo municipal council in partnership with the Association of Mariscadores (Shellfish Gatherers) of Vila do Bispo and Costa Vicentina.
