Summer arrives with temperatures set to soar

Start of summer to bring warmer weather to Portugal

Summer begins this evening, and while today’s weather may not yet show it, temperatures are due to soar accordingly throughout the coming days, reaching peaks of 38ºC in some parts of Portugal.

“After a prolonged period of relatively low temperatures for this time of year, a gradual increase in temperature will begin on June 20 (Thursday), becoming more significant from June 21 (Friday),” Portugal’s sea and atmosphere institute (IPMA) says in a statement.

The hottest weather is being forecast for the inland regions of the Algarve, Beira Baixa and Vale do Tejo, where maximum temperatures are due to range between 36ºC and 38ºC on Sunday. “There remains considerable uncertainty regarding the magnitude of corresponding values along the west coast,” the institute adds.

Skies will range from clear to cloudy throughout the coming days, while weak to moderate winds forecast throughout the country.

IPMA updates its forecasts daily on its website.
