Ten arrested in major Algarve drug bust

Operation is still ongoing

PSP police have announced the arrest of 10 people this Monday (June 24) as part of a major operation against drug trafficking in the Algarve.

The arrests follow an investigation aimed at fighting drug trafficking in the region – “namely in the municipalities of Portimão, Lagoa, Silves and Lagos” – which had been underway for around a year, PSP police say in a communiqué to the press.

The investigation led to 20 searches carried out this morning in the boroughs of Lagoa and Portimão. So far, three of these 10 people arrested have been named ‘arguidos’ (defendants) for the crimes of drug trafficking, possession of a prohibited weapon, and receiving stolen goods.

Authorities also seized “significant amounts of illicit substances, such as cocaine and hashish, as well as thousands of euros in cash, suspected to be proceeds from criminal activity.”

This operation involved dozens of PSP officers and was assisted by GNR police. PSP police add that it is still ongoing, with the final report due to be released “ASAP”.
