Boat became stranded near the Alfanzina lighthouse

Twenty-eight people had to be rescued on Tuesday afternoon after the tourist boat they were on lost propulsion and became stranded near the iconic Alfanzina lighthouse in Carvoeiro, Lagoa.

Authorities were alerted at 4.34pm and teams from the Ferragudo lifeboat station and Portimão maritime police were immediately dispatched to the scene, joined by volunteer firefighters from Portimão.

When rescue teams reached the boat, they found all 28 passengers were safe and did not need medical help, says a statement released by the national maritime authority (AMN).

The passengers were brought back to Portimão, where firefighters were waiting to assist them onshore.

Meanwhile, the boat remained where it was stranded, as its owner was notified that it had to wait until it passed an inspection to ensure it is safe to sail.
