Former president Cavaco Silva defends Portugal should have new elections

Former president of the Republic, Aníbal Cavaco Silva, has written exclusively in Expresso today defending the need for new elections on the mainland to ‘unblock’ the political impasse of a fragile minority government which has “difficulty in finding agreement” with parties of the opposition. He stresses that the only way for the country to make strides into the near future is by having a government with majority support in parliament. Cavaco Silva frequently gives the nation the benefit of his thoughts. This far, there has been no feedback from the government. President Marcelo however has said that in his viewpoint the economy is holding its own. “We learnt today that the inflation rate has fallen. We learnt that growth forecasts are going well. We learnt that the unemployment rate is at figures that, in European terms, are good. We learnt that the balance of trade has improved”. All in all, Cavaco Silva’s article may not have come out at the perfect moment.
