New Marriot hotel set to open at Verdelago Resort in 2027
Construction of a new €52.5 million five-star hotel has begun at Castro Marim’s Verdelago Resort.
The 197-room Marriott hotel – which will feature six secluded suites set within the resort’s pine forest – is set to open in 2027 and create over 200 direct jobs.
The first stone was laid on Monday, July 1 in a ceremony attended by several regional entities.
Joaquim Goes, administrator of Verdelago – Sociedade Imobiliária S.A., said that the hotel “represents a significant investment for the region and will also contribute to enhancing the attractiveness of this area of the Algarve, which currently lacks luxury accommodation to meet the growing demand.
“Our strategic plan aims to create one of the benchmark resorts in Southern Europe, with a concept of sustainable luxury, and attract high-income tourist markets,” Goes added.
The hotel will have a “strong sustainability component” in terms of its construction, architecture, energy and water supply and future tourist operation.
The new Marriott hotel will be one of the key infastructures of the Verdelago Resort, which opened on July 4, 2023, and markets itself as “the last paradise of the Algarve,” and a resort that sets itself apart due to its focus on sustainability and low construction density. Despite spanning 86 hectares of land, only 8.7% of it has been used for construction. “Seventy of those hectares are green areas, including a Green Recreation and Leisure Park with about 42 hectares, a 24-hectare natural reserve facing the sea, environmental interpretation areas, habitat conservation and promotion zones, and a two-hectare lake,” the resort says in a statement to the press.
In addition to the 340 residential tourism units and the five-star hotel, Verdelago Resort will also feature a Wellness Dome, a complex with various multi-sports fields (two tennis courts, four padel courts, a football field, a sand area for volleyball, footvolley, and beach soccer), a pump track for BMX/BTT, several walking and cycling paths totalling around 7km through cork oaks and pine trees, temporary ponds and a lagoon, “family support services” (Kids Club and babysitting), a central resort pool, and in the future, an orchard and garden with local products and an equestrian centre with horses for rides within the resort.
