Rosário Palma Ramalho, Portugal’s minister of labour, solidarity and social security, Rosário Palma Ramalho, has said in Coimbra today that poverty in this country is at a level that is “unacceptable in a developed country”, “hardly admissible in a formally developed state”. Speaking at the opening of the II Congress on the Present and Future(s) of Social Security, organised by the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra (FDUC), she said the government’s first measures have been aimed “at the poorest of the poor (…) Social Security has a future because we have an intergenerational pact that obliges it to have a future,” she added, acknowledging “sustainability” issues.
