World’s “oldest actor on stage” is Portuguese

Aged 97 years and four months, Ruy de Carvalho took the stage last weekend for the hundredth performance of a play about his life.

At 97 years and four months, as he likes to say, Ruy de Carvalho is, currently, the oldest actor on stage in the world.

This weekend, the iconic Portuguese actor took the stage for the hundredth performance of the play he is currently participating in, “Ruy, A História Devida”.

After touring 40 cities, the actor once again enchanted and moved the audience, eliciting laughter from everyone who, at each performance, was consistently amazed by the play that heavily relies on the protagonist’s improvisations.

The milestone session was celebrated with the public before the mayor of Odivelas paid tribute to the artist with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.

“Ruy, A História Devida” (The Life Story of Ruy de Carvalho), told by the famous actor and Luís Pacheco, is on show until July 21 at the Malaposta Cultural Centre in Odivelas.
