Portugal’s minister of health announced today that a commission of independent experts with experience in emergency medicine has been set up to analyse how the National Institute of Emergency Medicine (INEM), the largely state-funded ambulance service, can be overhauled. “It’s not just a question of funding,” Ana Paula Martins told parliament’s health committee. “It’s also a question of governance”. The minister noted that INEM had previously seen its revenue from insurance funding cut and “was managed with part of that funding, with an amount far below what it needed.”
