Prime Minister Luís Montenegro announced today the creation of a transversal working group to respond to the problem of domestic violence – rejecting accusations from PAN’s one and only MP that this scourge is not a concern of the government. “I cannot allow the honourable member to even imply that this government is not committed, absolutely focused, on combating the occurrence of cases of gender violence and domestic violence and on accompanying the victims”, Mr Montenegro replied to PAN’s Inês Sousa Real during the heated debate on the state of the nation, which has been taking place today in parliament, and was still ongoing as this text was uploaded. Ms Sousa Real’s reason for suggesting domestic violence is not a government concern was the number of incidents registered (reportedly an average of 75 per day) during the executive’s first 100 days in office.
