“To hell with stability”: this was the message given on Sunday by PCP leader Paulo Raimundo over the interminable question over whether or not the government’s State Budget would pass in October, and thus whether or not Portugal could continue in a state of ‘political stability’.
“What good is this budget?” Raimundo railed at an event with party faithful in Braga. “It serves to squeeze the lives of the majority, to safeguard the interests of a few! Is a budget like this good for the country? A budget like this is of no use to the country!
And we say more, excuse the expression, but there are limits to everything: to hell with stability…” Raimundo is advocating more focus on debating the budget’s measures, and safeguarding people’s lives, than on concerns about whether or not the document will pass and thus assure the current minority government passage into the New Year.
Political events like these will be increasing in coming months ahead of next year’s municipal elections where PCP communists will be hoping to recover some of its catastrophic losses in terms of voter popularity.
