Portugal’s PCP communists are in a (new) bind: they were the only national party to enthuse about Venezuela’s election results – and their apparent delight rankled with communists in Venezuela. The strategy has been ‘not to budge’. Said the party’s Bernardino Soares today: “I’m not going to comment on any statement by another political party, especially a non-Portuguese one“. But ‘the statement’ – by Óscar Figuera of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, talking to Rádio Observador – was more a series of questions. “Is the PCP aware of Nicolás Maduro government’s attack on the unions, the destruction of the Amazon, the alleged disregard for the Constitution in judicial proceedings (…) I dare ask them the following”, Figuera continued: “do you think you know Venezuela better than we do?”
