Portugal’s AD government “focused on bringing back emigrés”

“It’s worth believing in Portugal”, says PM

Portugal’s prime minister, Luís Montenegro, has told Portuguese emigrés in Viseu that “it’s worth believing in Portugal” and that the government is committed to ensuring their return to the country.

“I sincerely hope that everyone looks at our country and, even from the outside, feels the urge to come here on holiday, but, if possible, feels the urge to return”, he said yesterday evening, during his opening speech at the 632nd edition of the São Mateus Fair in Viseu.

As for those thinking of moving abroad, he hopes this desire will fade: “that they will find an opportunity here and not have to break what is most important in their lives”, such as ties to family and friends.

It’s worth believing in Portugal. We can do in Portugal what we can often do abroad”,  he urged.

Addressing the many emigrés who turned up for the popular fair, the prime minister explained that yesterday “instruments came into force to support young Portuguese citizens so that they pay less tax at what is one of the most crucial moments in their lives: the purchase of their first home.

“Today the exemption from the municipal tax on property transactions (IMT), Stamp Duty and all the emoluments that often prevent young Portuguese from being able to buy their home came into force,’ he recalled, adding that in September, “cuts in Personal Income Tax will also come into force, which is a cornerstone” of his government’s policies.

The aim of the Democratic Alliance, he said, is to “reward those who work more, not to go to each person’s effort to find so much of what is their productive capacity; to release more of the fruit of people’s efforts”.
