Algarve Innovation and Technology Park takes shape in Olhão

Algarve Innovation and Technology Park in Olhão will serve as hub for technological companies, health and wellness facilities and educational and research institutions

A major project to create the ambitious Algarve Innovation and Technology Park in Olhão has taken a decisive step forward.

Olhão mayor António Pina signed this week a contract for the planning of the creation of the future detailed plan (Plano de Pormenor, or PP), which will serve as the foundation of the technology park, due to be built on private land in Pechão.

The deal also involves the construction of around 548 public housing units, a project which the local council says it will develop in the coming years.

Meanwhile, the technology park will be built on a 48-hectare plot of land and will serve as a hub for technological companies, health and wellness facilities, educational and research institutions and residential areas “associated to the companies”, as well as 10 hectares of “urban green spaces.”

The planning contract also set an 18-month deadline for the owner of the land to present, in “close cooperation with the local council,” a proposal for the detailed plan of the park.

Olhão council also says that the contract has bound the owner of the land to following the remaining “applicable land management instruments,” namely the Regional Land Planning Plan of the Algarve and the “strategic goals of the municipality.”

Within three months, the company is due to inform the local authority of the technical and legal team which will be tasked with creating the proposal along with municipal technicians.

“This initiative is of immense municipal interest, marking a pivotal contribution from private enterprise towards achieving a core goal of our urban policy—promoting more rigorous urban and environmental planning for future land use,” said António Miguel Pina at the contract signing ceremony, which also gave the executive council a sneak peek at the project.
