A 23-year-old German woman had to be evacuated by helicopter after being gored by a bull during the traditional ‘Festas de Santa Maria’ in Ourique on Wednesday evening.
According to reports, the young woman suffered extensive injuries.
After being stabilised by first responders, she was flown to Faro Hospital where she was admitted, with a “reserved prognosis”.
The contours of this incident have not been fully explained, but this particular ‘festa’ has a tradition involving what is called a ‘largada de touros’, which is a form of open air ‘bullfight’ in which bulls run through the streets, and are baited by non-professional bullfighters as crowds watch separated by makeshift barriers.
