Deaths in Portugal ‘increase in July’ compared to July 2023

The number of deaths in Portugal increased by 8.9% in July compared to the same month in 2023, and by 2.9% compared to June, totalling 9,528 deaths, of which 304 (3.2%) were due to Covid-19, INE national statistics institute revealed today. INE’s data shows 779 more deaths than in July 2023 and 268 more deaths than in June, with a total of 9,528 deaths recorded. Taking the first seven months of the year together, mortality totalled 71,210, 1,770 (2.5%) more than in the same period in 2023, according to INE. The most recent statistics released today for June also show a decrease in births of 4.4% (305 less) compared to the same month in 2023, and 5.9% (415 less) compared to last May, with 6,665 live births recorded in June.
