The flip side to wonderfully warm sea…
The wonderfully warm temperatures of the water on many south coast beaches are repelling sardines (which like cold temperatures). So, there is a flip side to this summer’s easy bathing.
But before people rush to suggest this is ‘completely abnormal’, current temperatures are lower than they have been in other high points of the last decade, reports SIC Notícias.
For example, in 2016, Faro’s coastal buoy recorded a water temperature of 26.5ºC. And in 2021, the ocean buoy – even further offshore – recorded 26.3ºC.
And just as different regions record very different temperatures (Sagres/ Aljezur, for instance, are rarely as stifling hot as the south, east of Lagos), different beaches are recording very different water temperatures.
“Experts are talking of a negative anomaly” in Portimão and Lagos, where wind is stirring up the water, “pushing the warmer water away, and making the colder water rise from the lower layers.
“This should change as September approaches”, says the station – saying, for the time being, sea water temperatures from Faro to Portimão should be in the region of 21ºC, while areas from Tavira to Montegordo will get more like 23ºC.
Regarding the weather picture in general, the 10-day forecast is for more of what we have now, with temperatures in the high 20ºCs to low 30ºCs – pretty normal for this time of year.
As for the sardines, if you like them, you will need to get down to the market sharpish for the next week or so. ND
