As Monday breaks, the various fronts of a wildfire burning in Madeira since last Wednesday appeared to have been ‘brought under control’.
Hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes over the weekend, as a precaution, but the upshot of intense firefighting, aided by reinforcements from the mainland and Azores, has seen the situation calm considerably. Conditions are still ‘treacherous’: high temperatures/ high winds/low humidity – meaning firefighters have a long way to go yet to ensure there are no reignitions.
Having written this early this morning, a few hours later, two fronts were being described as ‘still active’: the picture continuing to be complicated.
