A 10 year old boy was killed outright yesterday when a tractor driven by his father reversed over the child’s head.
The tragedy took place on a farm in Coutada Velha, Benavente, where the Brazilian father works. From reports from the scene, it sounds as if the child was riding at the back of the tractor, and fell off as the father was “making a complicated manoeuvre”.
A source for firefighters attending the scene told Correio da Manhã that it was a “very complex situation”.
There will be many questions, not least why the child was riding on the back of the tractor at all.
The child’s parents were both assisted at the scene by a team of psychologists. Explains Jornal de Notícias, this latest tractor related death brings the fatal tally so far this year in Portugal to 17. April was the month where there were the highest number of deaths. Since 2021, 143 people have been killed in accidents involving tractors.
