While everyone experiences something different during each Reiki session, feelings of peace, tranquillity, relaxation and positivity are the most common
It was over 10 years ago that Reiki spontaneously became a part of Sara Sargaço’s life, becoming not just a practice but a way of life. She had never encountered this “intelligent universal energy that organises and restores energetic balance” before, but the fascination was always there.
Without hesitation, she completed Reiki Level 1 alongside a friend – an experience she will never forget. During the initiation, Sara, who had no expectations and no intention of becoming a master, felt “a column of energy entering through the top of her head and traveling down her spine,” a sensation that was “unforgettable” for her, though it varies from person to person. At that moment, she realised that the attraction she had always felt was justified and that her intuition was guiding her toward a new reality.
“The experience was incredible, wonderful and very intense,” she says, explaining that Reiki “promotes spiritual connection, guides us toward our life purpose, and elevates us to higher frequencies and positive emotions.”
As Sara puts it, “we all have the innate ability to channel the energy of the source, which must be awakened by a Master.” Realising this, her curiosity to delve deeper into what she was discovering continued to grow. With a degree in Philosophy from the Faculty of Letters at the University of Lisbon and a natural interest in questions of knowledge and the mind, Sara was initiated into the Golden Tera Mai healing system and directly contacted its American founder, Kathleen Milner.
From afar, Kathleen transmitted the necessary knowledge for self-healing. “This is a tool given to people to improve the world in various ways. Reiki is an emotional and mental treatment that helps with what we attract and how we treat others,” Sara says. “The initiation is the opening of the channel, the entry of energy from the source. This way, we begin to channel energy through our hands for ourselves and others,” she adds.
Later, her desire to help friends and family and contribute to the well-being of those who crossed her path led her to complete Levels 2 and 3. The more knowledge she acquired, the more she identified with Reiki, and gradually it became part of her way of life and personal development. “This practice also involves a certain conduct, a certain posture, both toward ourselves and others,” she stresses.
“I feel that Reiki is my calling and that it is a part of my life for good. I realised that I want to live for Reiki and through Reiki,” Sara says, adding that her goals are personal growth and helping others through therapy.
While each session elicits different emotions and has distinct results for each person, a common experience is a feeling of peace, tranquillity, relaxation, serenity, positivity, and encouragement. When Reiki is practised, the energy of the universe is channelled for holistic healing that brings numerous benefits, from improved blood circulation, relief of pain and psychological and physical suffering, to the cleansing of negative energy and blockages, acting as a detoxifier for the body, organs, and cells, Sara explains.
“To be healthy, each of our organs has a frequency, and the entry of energy into our body gradually balances all vibrations and progressively leads them to the perfect frequency,” the Reiki master says.
This “natural, non-invasive healing” works on creating harmony and tuning between body, mind, emotions, and spirit. Many times, health problems originate in our emotions, obstacles we can’t overcome, adversities we can’t handle, and this causes energetic blockages that can be unblocked,” Sara states.
Chronic and serious illnesses like cancer, diabetes, tension problems, or bone issues may originate from emotions repressed over years, unresolved traumas that eventually manifest in the physical body. “When energy stagnates and stops flowing, it interferes with the perfect frequency, and the body doesn’t function as it should,” Sara notes.
Whatever the reason for seeking Reiki – better sleep, reduced anxiety, breaking bad habits, or simply relieving everyday stress – all are valid, and this is a practice that anyone can do. However, those on medication should be aware that they may need to adjust it with their doctor. It’s also important to note that Reiki should not be applied to broken bones as it accelerates the healing process, but only when they are already set in place. In the case of open wounds, however, it is excellent for stopping bleeding and aiding in healing.
The duration of each session varies depending on what Sara feels, but it will last at least an hour. There are 12 positions, and each should last at least three minutes, a time that can increase if there is a heavier energetic load or pronounced pain requiring more energy to be channelled. “At the beginning, a direct connection to the source is made, a technique that is a special emotional and mental treatment, and at the end, in addition to cleansing the person, their aura is also smoothed,” the master explains, mentioning that she can measure the person’s energetic frequency at the beginning and end of the session, a moment when there is also the possibility of sharing sensations and emotions.
Sara’s services are available from 5pm, and whilst she mostly works from her serene home studio in Portimão, she is also willing to travel to clients who are unable to visit her.
