Algarve man accused of sexually abusing underaged niece 79 times

Man has been charged with 79 aggravated counts of child sex abuse

A 40-year-old man has been charged with 79 aggravated counts of child sex abuse by the Portuguese Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) for allegedly sexually abusing his underaged niece in the Algarve when she was just six and seven years old.

The crimes reportedly took place between 2021 and 2022 at family homes in Faro and Moncarapacho (Olhão), according to a statement published on the website of the Évora Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

Says the statement, the man is believed to have “taken advantage of the intimate relationship” afforded by being the child’s uncle to carry out the alleged abuse, which the Public Prosecutor’s Office says caused “several psychopathological changes” to the child.

The investigation, led by the Southern Directorate of the Polícia Judiciária, has culminated in the case being referred for trial before a collective court, following an indictment by a prosecutor from the first section of the Department of Investigation and Penal Action (DIAP) of Faro.
